CENTRAL AMERICA SHIPWRECK PCGS MS 65 OGH. CENTRAL AMERICA SHIPWRECK PCGS MS 65 GEM OLD HOLDER GOLD LABEL. On September 9, 1857, the S. Central America encountered an estimated category 2 hurricane off the coast of North Carolina while en route from the Panamanian port of Colon to New York. She sustained heavy damage and eventually sank 2 days later, killing over 300 people and sending approximately 9 tons of American gold coins and bars to the bottom of the ocean. The wreck was discovered September 11, 1988 and much of the gold and artifacts were recovered. The present coin survived the wreck without virtually any marks, damage from the storm or the actual sinking. This coin looks truly incredible considering it spent over 130 years at the bottom of the ocean and exhibits truly gorgeous color and luster.
It is housed in one of the original PCGS S. Central America holders from approximately 1999 and has a gold label, which commands a premium. We feel this coin is closer to MS-66.
