Lustrous and devoid of wear but with a few faint lines in fields, multiple die-cracks, scarce and desirable provenance. Brother Jonathan by Dennis M.On its final voyage, such passengers included the newly-appointed superintendent of The Dalles Mint (a new federal mint set to open in Orgeon), a notable San Francisco journalist, the Surveyor General of the Washington Territory, a top general who commanded the Department of the Pacific, and a brothel owner traveling with seven young ladies. Its cargo during that voyage consisted of large machinery, trade goods, and many newly-mint San Francisco double eagles. Another safe aboard contained jewelry, gold coins and gold bars.
Only three lifeboats were launched and, despite being only a few miles from shore, only one made it to land. Of the 244 passengers and crew aboard, only 19 people survived. Despite salvage efforts beginning two weeks after the sinking, nothing was recovered until the 1930s when some gold bars were supposedly recovered from the site.
It took until the 1990s when the Deep Sea Research salvage group located the wreck and brought up some 1,200 gold coins, many of which were San Francisco-minted Double Eagles in near-mint condition. Despite advanced technology now in use, still more treasure from the Brother Jonathan has yet to be found.
