2011 1849 Pattern Double Eagle Smithsonian 1 oz Gold NGC Ultra Cameo Gem Proof

The Double Eagle is among the most well-known classic U. Many are familiar with the Double Eagle designs created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens.

The gold proof shown here features a design that was used for the very first Double Eagle ever struck by the U. This proof weighs 1 troy oz. 999 fine gold, it was struck by a private Mint in 2011. Mintage of these proofs was unbelievably limited.

Part of this coin's appeal is the fact that only 1 original 1849 Double Eagle is known to exist today. The designs featured on this coin are the work of James B. The obverse shows his finely detailed portrait of Liberty.

There are plenty of details to observe here. The lower portion of the design is inscribed with the date, 1849. The reverse displays Longacre's heraldic bald eagle design. The central portion shows the eagle spreading its wings wide as it holds arrows and an olive branch with its talons.

This side is inscribed with "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and DOUBLE EAGLE. Comes with gorgeous display box and pamphlet.
